New York Metropolis police on Thursday arrested 18 individuals, together with two councilmen, in protests over the detention of a outstanding immigration activist.
The demonstrations outdoors a federal constructing in Manhattan have been over the detention of Ravi Ragbir, a citizen of Trinidad who has been preventing deportation after a fraud conviction.
His lawyer, Alina Das, stated Ragbir was handcuffed throughout a scheduled check-in with immigration officers.
A spokeswoman for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Rachael Yong Yow, stated Ragbir will stay in custody till he’s deported to Trinidad.
“In an exercise of discretion, the company had beforehand allowed him to stay free from custody with periodic check-ins, whereas his case was underneath courtroom assessment,” Yong Yow stated. “He has since exhausted his petitions and appeals by way of the immigration courts, the Board of Immigration Appeals, and the U.S. District Courtroom.”
Police arrested demonstrators who blocked an ambulance, considering Ragbir was inside. Metropolis Councilmen Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams, each Democrats, have been amongst these arrested.
